BIO NEWZ
Project Freya
Sustainable Nitrogen for Biomass Fermentation.
Nitrogen is an essential building block in fermentation, required for the formation of cellular components and products such as proteins. The choice of nitrogen source has a significant impact on the overall COâ‚‚ footprint of fermentation processes.

Vital Fluid has developed a technology that converts atmospheric nitrogen gas into chemically bound nitrogen in plasma-activated water, referred to as Natural Nitrogen. This technology enables the production of reactive nitrogen in a significantly more sustainable way compared to conventional nitrogen production methods.

Within Project Freya, BioscienZ investigated whether Vital Fluid’s Natural Nitrogen can replace traditional nitrogen sources in fermentation processes. By doing so, the project aims to further improve the sustainability of industrial biomass fermentation.
Project Freya is co-funded by the European Union and OP Zuid.
